Book Description

Uncontrolled population growth, a significant problem for many countries, depresses real living standards in all developing areas. As a corollary, un controlled population growth also stresses the ability to deliver adequate reproductive health care on both national and individual levels. To focus on this and related problems an International Congress to examine many aspects of male and female Reproductive Health Center Care was held on 10-15 October 1982 in Maui, Hawaii, USA. This volume is a result of the proceedings from the 'Symposium on Male Fertility and its Regulation' which was a part of the Reproductive Health Care Congress. The organizers of this symposium recognized the need to focus male reproductive understanding on contraceptive development. The ultimate objective was and still is to produce a variety of safe and effective male contraceptives similar to that accomplished in the female. Speakers were invited to review the state of the art in several areas related to male contra ception, reproductive toxicity and reproductive biology. The abstracts of these sessions were published as a special issue of Archives of Andrology (Vol. 9, No.1, August, 1982). Subsequently, this volume was assembled from key papers presented at the Symposium. Additionally, invited man uscripts from leaders in specific areas were solicited to provide additional range to the topics covered.

Book Description
This contemporary account of male fertility provides a much needed bridge between those seeking to understand the subject from an evolutionary and biological perspective and those with clinical responsibility for the investigation and treatment of infertility. Accordingly, the first half of the book deals with the evolutionary aspects of male reproduction and sperm competition, sperm production and delivery in man and other animals, spermatogenesis and epididymal function, sperm transport in the female tract and the apparent decline in human sperm count. The second part of the book puts greater emphasis on clinical problems and opens with a discussion of intracytoplasmic sperm injection, its value and limitations. This is followed by a review of modern developments in the genetics of male fertility and proceeds to a further chapter on the role of surgical procedures used in the treatment. Semen analysis is critically reviewed and the molecular techniques now being used in preimplantation diagnosis and in the study of mitochondrial inheritance are fully described. Taken together these chapters, written by an international team of authors, illustrate the breadth of vision needed to tackle the problem of male fertility.

Book Description
The Male Pill is the first book to reveal the history of hormonal contraceptives for men. Nelly Oudshoorn explains why it is that, although the technical feasibility of male contraceptives was demonstrated as early as the 1970s, there is, to date, no male pill. Ever since the idea of hormonal contraceptives for men was introduced, scientists, feminists, journalists, and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs have questioned whether men and women would accept a new male contraceptive if one were available. Providing a richly detailed examination of the cultural, scientific, and policy work around the male pill from the 1960s through the 1990s, Oudshoorn advances work at the intersection of gender studies and the sociology of technology. Oudshoorn emphasizes that the introduction of contraceptives for men depends to a great extent on changing ideas about reproductive responsibility. Initial interest in the male pill, she shows, came from outside the scientific community: from the governments of China and India, which were interested in population control, and from Western feminists, who wanted the responsibilities and health risks associated with contraception shared more equally between the sexes. She documents how in the 1970s, the World Health Organization took the lead in investigating male contraceptives by coordinating an unprecedented, worldwide research network. She chronicles how the search for a male pill required significant reorganization of drug-testing standards and protocols and of the family-planning infrastructure—including founding special clinics for men, creating separate spaces for men within existing clinics, enrolling new professionals, and defining new categories of patients. The Male Pill is ultimately a story as much about the design of masculinities in the last decades of the twentieth century as it is about the development of safe and effective technologies.
