Book Description
The aim of this special volume is to give an overview of the historical background and present status of eco-materials processing and design for materials research, and to foresee future trends in the field. Serious global and environmental problems have led the materials manufacturing industries to monitor closely the formation and accumulation of carbon dioxide and other deleterious gases in the atmosphere, as well to reduce raw materials use and energy consumption and limit other factors which reflect the environmental impact of the industry.Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). The papers contained within cover topics such as room- and low-temperature synthesis, low-energy processing, aqueous synthesis and processing, the re-use and recycling of waste materials and the elimination of such hazardous materials as cadmium, mercury, lead and chromium which are restricted in use, in electronic components and automobile parts, under the European Committee RoHS guidelines. It is shown how the materials industries have addressed environmental concerns by investing in research on various novel materials in order to ensure safer and cleaner systems and processes. This thorough coverage will certainly make the book essential reading for all of those who care about conserving the world for the benefit of future generations. Addressing environmental concern within the materials manufacturing industries, the January 2009 symposium explores low-temperature synthesis, low-energy processing, aqueous synthesis and processing, the reuse and recycling of waste materials, and the elimination of such hazardous materials as cadmium, mercury, lead, and 6-valence chromium. The Asian contributors share recent research on high-performance materials, hybrid composites, nanostructure materials, biomaterials, photocatalysts, multifunction of materials, and porous materials. Topics of the 195 papers include adding gneiss to asphalt concrete mixtures, characterization of power plant bottom ash, the effects of filler on the properties of silicone rubber, the fabrication of clay foam ceramics, and the use of recycled calcium slag for clean steel refining.

Book Description
Carbon Composites: Composites with Carbon Fibers, Nanofibers, and Nanotubes, Second Edition, provides the reader with information on a wide range of carbon fiber composites, including polymer-matrix, metal-matrix, carbon-matrix, ceramic-matrix and cement-matrix composites. In contrast to other books on composites, this work emphasizes materials rather than mechanics. This emphasis reflects the key role of materials science and engineering in the development of composite materials. The applications focus of the book covers both the developing range of structural applications for carbon fiber composites, including military and civil aircraft, automobiles and construction, and non-structural applications, including electromagnetic shielding, sensing/monitoring, vibration damping, energy storage, energy generation, and deicing. In addition to these new application areas, new material in this updated edition includes coverage of cement-matrix composites, carbon nanofibers, carbon matrix precursors, fiber surface treatment, nanocarbons, and hierarchical composites. An ideal source of information for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals working with composite materials and carbon fibers, this book can be used both as a reference book and as a textbook. Introduces the entire spectrum of carbon fiber composites, including polymer-matrix, metal-matrix, carbon-matrix, ceramic-matrix and cement-matrix composites Systematically sets out the processing, properties, and applications of each type of material Emphasizes processing as the foundation of understanding, manufacturing, and designing with composite materials

Book Description
Solid state ionics is a multidisciplinary scientific and industrial field dealing with ionic transport phenomena in solids. In a couple of decades, solid state ionics has become one of the largest disciplines closely related to energy technologies, such as batteries, fuel cells, and so on. So far, a large number of scientists and engineers in Asia as well as in Europe and US are engaged in the research in solid state ionics. In the context of such a situation, the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics was founded in 1986, and a series of academic conferences has been held biennially since 1988. In 2012, the 13th conference is organized in Sendai, Japan. This book provides research papers describing the latest developments and findings in the field of solid state ionics. The selected contributions from prominent researchers in the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics, which are presented at the 13th Asian Conference on Solid State Ionics, can be found. The papers in this book are detailed and suitable to understand recent research trends in solid state ionics, and thus will be a valuable resource for physicists, chemists, and material scientists. Contents:BatteriesFuel CellsMaterial Properties, ProcessingFundamental, Theories Readership: Students and professionals in solid state ionics. Keywords:Solid State Ionics;Battery;Fuel Cell;SensorKey Features:The book uniquely focuses on ionic transport phenomena in solids and their engineering application such as batteries, fuel cells, etc.The book includes research papers on latest developments and findings in the field of solid state ionicsThe book contains many contributions from prominent authors in the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics
